Time to Bounce Back

It’s always hard to write about the end of the season, especially when it ends in a tough loss. In our third playoff appearance, the Mizfits were pushed out in the first round by the Carolina Phoenix. Despite the score, we know these ladies gave it everything they had on the field and we’re not going anywhere anytime soon!

The game itself was one of the closest games in the entire 2022 WFA Playoff season so far with a final score of 33-29. Both teams made some amazing plays and both teams made some mistakes. We also want to note there were a ton of flags thrown throughout the game and not always thrown equally.

Phoenix were the first to draw blood with a touchdown and extra point to put them on the board first. However, the Mizfits were able to respond quickly with a TD run in by Kamari Townsend and two-point conversion between Rodneika Crutcher and Erica Mason. We made some great stops in the first half including a blocked punt and a lucky kickoff that resulted in the Mizfits retaining possession as well as two sacks by Sabrina Rhodes. Cort Mosier had some huge runs for yards and Jasmine Taylor-Brimm came up with a one-armed interception. The second TD was also run in by Townsend and a qb keep for another one. Unfortunately, we also had some blown plays and an interception that worked against us in the first half. Despite this, the Mizfits went into halftime on top with a score of 21-14.

During the second half, the mistakes started to catch up to us and we weren’t able to overcome all the things working against us. The Phoenix were able to come out and score two TD’s without us answering. As a matter of fact, we were unable to add any points during the third quarter which didn’t help the cause. Things started to turn around as Carah Johnson snagged an interception and regained possession of the ball. We also were able to get a few key stops and fumble recoveries, so we were not giving up at all! We had some more blocked passes, Mandy Powell got in the back field for a sack, and some big runs kept us in the game until the very end. Our final touchdown and two-point conversion was run in by Jessica Phelps to bring us to our final score.

All in all, it was a hell of a game and one we’re very proud of. Football is a hard sport with so much to learn and perfect. All season we’ve dealt with weather issues, questionable calls, and numerous injuries. The odds were against the Mizfits even from the beginning. Massey had us ranked very low despite our previous season records. In spite of all this, we came and we conquered as much as we could. We’re so proud of what we’ve done. There’s only one way to go from here. Up!

Thank you as always for all your support. Mizfits Nation, we love you!
