Mizfits Win Volunteer Cup

KNOXVILLE, TN- The Music City Mizfits, Middle Tennessee’s only women’s football team, went to Knoxville on Saturday trying to find themselves. What they found is that they are a damn good football team, and now all of Tennessee knows it after they dismantled the Knoxville Lightning by the score of 31-0. Both the offense and the defense were dominant in the performance, with every player on the roster contributing to the win.  The victory earned Music City the Volunteer Cup, and evened their season record at 1-1.

Music City got on the board on their second drive of the 1st quarter, when QB Tessa Marsh-Ortiz hit Stacey Dykstra with a strike over the middle for a 20 yard TD pass. The conversion was missed after some miscommunication from the sideline. Marsh-Ortiz then added another touchdown in the 2nd quarter on a nicely blocked keep up the middle. Even though they had another failed conversion, Music City took a 12-0 lead into halftime. After the break, the two teams traded possessions, but things broke open with six minutes left in the third quarter, when rookie Ashley Crawford took a handoff and went untouched around the left end for a 75 yard score. The Mizfits then made the first extra point kick in team history, with Jessica Phelps converting after a well placed hold by Charity Jackson. After a Knoxville turnover, quarterback Donita Hines hit 2nd year Mizfit Karissa Burnett with a perfectly thrown over the shoulder pass, which Burnett snatched from the air to make the score 25-0. Hines added the final score in the 4th quarter after a short keeper up the middle.

The Mizfits now get a bye week before hosting the Cincinnati Sizzle on May 5. That game will be played at Lighthouse Chrsitian School, 5100 Blue Hole Rd, Antioch, TN 37013. The kickoff is set for 7pm. Tickets are $5 at the gate, kids 12 and under get in free. This will be the second meeting of the season between these two teams. The Sizzle won the first match, 16-6 in Cincinnati.
