The Mizfits Got Somethin’ To Say

Mizfits will play the Derby City Dynamite on June 26th in the first round of playoffs!

When the smoke cleared on June 19th, the Mizfits ended the season with a real bang! They’ve secured the #2 spot in D3 in the entire WFA. They’ve ended their 5th season with the WFA with a record of 5-1. They’ve more than earned the trip to the playoffs and boy are we proud!

Coming into the last game against the Vanguards, the Mizfits expected to take the win, but it was not done lightly. The Vanguards were impressive with their ball movement during the first half while receiving help from several Mizfit penalties. They hung tough throughout the entire game and played a great game, but the Mizfits were able to secure the victory with a score of 56 to 0.

On the offensive side of things, the Mizfits kept the ball on the ground for a majority of the game. We racked up 400 rushing yards, with a majority belonging to Kaitlin Siddall, Jessica Phelps, Tessa Ortiz-Marsh, Jasmine Brimm, and Kamari Townsend (each with less than 5 carries!). Phelps would take one of her two carries down the field for 80 yards. We also had 3 touchdown passes courtesy of Ortiz-Marsh to Stacey Dykstra and one 70-yard kick return from Brimm for a touchdown. Overall, everything went right for the Mizfits while handling the ball.

Conversely, they struggled to get the defense settled at the start of the game. After a few false start penalties, the Mizfits were defending the goal line a little sooner than expected. Without fail, the defense rallied and made every stop required for the shutout. Brimm, Sheldon Bins, Townsend, and Cie Cie Harris round out the top tacklers for the game, though everyone pretty much got in on the action. Allison Randall, Townsend, and Siddall all took home an interception.

Now….the task at hand is simple: Beat Derby City. The Mizfits are no strangers to the playoff landscape; however, this is the best team they’ve taken so far! Music City has seen a surge in talent among the rookies and veterans alike. Furthermore, the support from fans and volunteers has improve dramatically over the past few years. It takes time to build a legacy, but it looks like the Mizfits are finally seeing the fruits of their labor coming to fruition. One of their biggest secret weapons is not having one; each player has a purpose and a reason for being on that field and they’ll all do the job!

This game will probably be the best game of the entire playoffs. Everyone else calls it a rivalry. You have the #1 and #2 seeds going head to head. It should be livestreamed on Youtube as well as live streamed from the Mizfits sidelines. It’s evident that women’s football is making a name in the South as they fight to bring the glory back to their hometowns. Either way, Music City is just excited to take on the challenge and prove to everyone that they have what it takes to take it all the way.

There’s not much else to say. It’s win or go home now! Eat or be eaten! Fight! To live another day!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND GO MIZFITS!!!!

Mizfits Fight Till The Finish

The Mizfits have had a wild ride this season. We were able to play our first two home games and left the field with the W over the Sizzle and the Tigers. After a bye week, we came back and met the Derby City Dynamite in Jeffersonville for a battle for the conference. The Mizfits lost that game, but had intentions on getting the ball rolling again with another game scheduled with the Tigers. Unfortunately, the game was cancelled due to the removal of the opponent from the WFA.

There has been a ton of talk surrounding what happened on the field between the Tigers and the Mizfits. There isn’t a lot to say; the game was played and some calls were made and some were missed. The Mizfits have always been an aggressive team and we’re always going to give our all on the field. The team received their sanctions and served them. That was all there was to it. We didn’t ever take this issue lightly, but we’re not going to feed into the drama. It is hard to hear your coaches, owners, and players being addressed with bias in public forums, but we are beyond proud of our organization and we’ll continue to put in the work we always have. We are saddened by the outcome as we want every woman to play the game (and enjoy it) and we wish the Tigers the best going forward. We also want to thank the Gridiron Beauties for allowing Head Coach Tracy Logan to speak on the matter from our end. Make sure to take a peek at their podcast on iTunes!

After the smoke cleared, the Mizfits were rescheduled to have a bye week on May 29th and would return to the field on June 5th versus the Cincinnati Sizzle. The Mizfits were successful in making a huge comeback and securing the win in Kentucky! There were some amazing plays by rookie Kamari Townsend (80yd punt return for touchdown) and pick six for Stacey Dykstra. Sheldon Bins, Jessica Phelps, and Tessa Ortiz-Marsh were the top tacklers for the game. We also saw rookie Erica Mason with two big touchdowns (one a perfect pass from Ortiz-Marsh) and another one from Kayla Hutcherson. Kaitlin Siddall led the team in rushing yards and Leshay Shute lead the team in receiving yards. We had some sacks from Bins and Melanie Johnson, forced fumbles by Bins and Allison Randall, and a fumble recovery by Antoinette Carroll.

Another fun fact is the extra points! Most women’s football teams go for two after a touchdown, but we’ve had a lot of success with the kicking game over the past two years. Phelps began PAT’s in the 2019 season, hitting a couple of them throughout practice and games. In the 2021 season, we’ve hit plenty of those extra points thanks to the legs of rookie Molly Suess and veteran Dykstra. Between these ladies, we’re making more and more strides in improving our game as a fundamentally sound and well stacked football team.

The Mizfits secured the win over the Sizzle. Both games, the Mizfits scored 33 points. This is the first time the Mizfits beat the Sizzle away!

Onward to the future for the Mizfits! We’ll be taking on our in-state friends, the Knoxville Lightning, on July 12th in Knoxville. Since they had a game scheduled with the Tigers for the 12th, we were scheduled in their place. This always proves to be a fun and friendly game. After Knoxville, Music City will only have the Vanguards to finish up the regular season at home on June 19th. We’ll be going live on the sidelines for the Knoxville game and live streaming the Vanguards game. We’d rather have you there in person, though! You can always purchase your tickets at the gate, but feel free to check our website for ticket information.

Thank you, as always, for the love and support you have for the Mizfits. We wouldn’t be anything without the fans and lovers of good football.

Mizfits Regroup After Heartbreaking Loss Against Conference Rivals

The Mizfits are in recovery mode after suffering a tough loss to the Derby City Dynamite. The Mizfits drop to 2-1 as we head into our second bye week of the season. Despite the score, the Mizfits didn’t give up the fight throughout all 4 quarters in Jeffersonville, IN. We’ll be working harder this week to make a comeback on June 5th.

After a 3-hour drive to the Hoosier state, the Mizfits were set to take down the Dynamite in what many expect to be a first look at playoffs. Missing a few key players and a few other key ingredients played a part in the loss, but the biggest battle for the Mizfits will be themselves. The first couple of games in the season were against good teams and Music City was able to dominate both opponents. However, the Derby City Dynamite have always been a hurdle and a deciding factor in how the season will play out. With that amount of pressure, the Mizfits are still looking for the perfect mix to bring the rivalry back to life.

Despite the loss, the Mizfits defense was able to get a few big stops to prevent a huge upset. However the Dynamite were able to get a lot of ball movement with the run game. The Mizfits will have to find a way to get a stop in the backfield and keep the momentum going. We also welcomed back QB Tessa Ortiz-Marsh who will be instrumental in revamping the offensive game.

Overall, the Mizfits are down, but not out. Due to circumstances outside of our control, the Mizfits will not be playing on May 29th and will instead meet the Sizzle for the second time this season on June 5th. Be sure to check the page for updates, highlights, and more Mizfit News!

Mizfits Tag The Tigers in Shutout

The Mizfits are on a roll! Music City met the Huntsville Tigers for the first time in several years. Although the Mizfits had some troubles here and there, the ladies were able to secure the victory with a score of 33-0 over the Tigers. The Mizfits will advance to 2-0 on the 6-game regular season.

It’s going to be a tough road for the Mizfits to make it to Canton, but the stars have aligned so far and the Mizfits aren’t letting up any time soon. After the smoke cleared on May 15th, the Mizfits are 2nd in the Southeast American Conference and a good contender for a playoff run! After two games, Music City has had no opponent score and no game below 30 points. Massey Ratings has Music City at number 11 in the entire league, but the odds are still against us as we battle against strength of schedule and other things out of our control. Don’t worry though! The Mizfits is still fighting the fight and it will be very interesting to see what happens after the regular season ends in June.

As for the Mizfits and Tigers battle, it was a show from the start of the game. Within the first minute of play, the Mizfits were able to secure a pick 6 with rookie corner Kamari Townsend followed quickly by securing a fumbled punt return. The trend would be the same throughout the night, full of interceptions, fumbles, and some big runs for the Mizfits. The defense also held it down, making sure the Tigers got very few first downs and plenty of big tackles. Touchdowns for the game include Townsend, Jessica Phelps, Kate Siddall, Stacey Dykstra, and Leshay Shute. Leaders on defense were veterans Jasmine Brimm, Sheldon Bins, and Cie Cie Harris with interceptions, blocked kicks, and a few sacks between them. Defensive MVP was Kamari Townsend who also had a sack and several tackles for big yard losses. Offensive MVP was Molly Suess who made some big blocks (check the highlight film), a successful PAT and converted the unsuccessful PAT into a 2-point conversion. All in all, the Mizfits played a hell of a game.

While there is plenty to celebrate, there is always more to work on. There were a few too many flags on the field and too many points that were left there as well. The Tigers played a good game and were able to get some stops on defensive, but most of the mistakes were simply on us. The Mizfits will be taking on their toughest competition for the year with the Derby City Dynamite. The history between the Mizfits and the Dynamite stretches back for years and it’s always been a battle. Unfortunately, the Mizfits have been on the losing side of the battle for the past three games and they’re itching to prove they are a force this year! As we near the end of the week and prepare for the upcoming show, we know the Dynamite are doing the same and with a point to prove themselves. Willpower and determination will be the deciding factors this time around and we’re more than ready to show the world what the Mizfits can do.

Make sure to keep your eyes on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for more Mizfits news and scores!

Hard Work. All Day.

Mizfits Scorch Sizzle in Season Opener

The Mizfits are starting the season off with a bang! After a scoreless first half, Music City was able to blank the Sizzle and leave the field with a score of 33-0. The Mizfits will advance to 1-0 on the season!

This was a game of many firsts for the Mizfits. Players were moved around to different positions due to pre-season injuries. This was the first game in Mizfits history to have multiple successful extra points. The media team also got to take a crack at live streaming the first game! Some things went as planned and some things went awry, but in the end, the Mizfits walked away with the W.

The Mizfits offense started the game with the ball, but were unable to get into the end zone during the first half. That was the theme for the entire first half. The ball was moving down the field, but neither side was able to convert in the beginning. The Mizfits defense held it down during the first half, keeping the Sizzle at zero and limiting first down conversions throughout the first half. Overall though, the first half was pretty quiet.

During the second half, the Mizfits were back with a new attitude! Within a few minutes of the 3rd quarter, the Mizfits were finally on the board. Momentum would carry over to the defensive side of the ball, continuing to hit the Sizzle with key stops. We had a few sacks from veterans Sheldon Bins (causing a turnover), Jasmine Brimm, and Antoinette Carroll. We also had a few HUGE hits from Brimm and rookie Allison Randall. Those stops were able to help seal the Mizfits victory. We saw Jessica Phelps and Kate Siddall at quarterback for a majority of the game making a few key passes down the stretch. Our scorers for the game include Phelps and Siddall followed by a slew of rookie receivers: Kayla Hutcherson, Erica Mason, and Molly Suess. We also had three successful extra points tacked on by Suess who missed just 1 of 4 extra point attempts.

Mizfits 2021 Schedule

There’s plenty to be proud of, but the Mizfits are already working to improve. The team left a lot of sacks on the field as well as a few interceptions that were dropped or knocked away in the end. The offense is also going to have to find the secret to scoring in the first half. Defensive MVP for the game was Leshay Shute and offensive MVP was Jessica Phelps. Their contributions help bring the Mizfits in at #2 in the conference and #11 in the league for D3.

This weekend, the Mizfits will take on the Huntsville Tigers in their first meeting in years! We’ll take on the Tigers right here at home at 6pm. We’re only going to improve, so make sure you grab your tickets now!

Cafe Coco

Cafe Coco is a Nashville staple and now it will be the Mizfits home base of operations for tomfoolery and turkey rocks. After the game, you can catch the Mizfits eating some delicious meals and knocking back a nice beer. Cafe Coco has been around since 1995 and under new management, they’ve done an amazing job bringing back the nostalgia and fun after a tough year that has affected so many businesses. Nashville Elite

Make way for the Nashville Elite! The Nashville Elite is a football organization designed to provide a platform to showcase young, exceptional football talent in the Nashville area. The Elite have played a major role in propelling careers to the next level, whether it be on the collegiate or professional level. This year alone, the Elite have seen more than 5 players sign contracts! We also have another thing in common: the coaching staff! Head Coach Tracy Logan is also a coach for the Elite and we’ll often host practices together. The Nashville Elite help make us better each and every practice and we can’t wait to root them on in the upcoming 2021 season!

Butterfly Recovery Women’s Recovery Center

Butterfly Moments Women’s Recovery Center was founded by Mary Laremore. The center is dedicated to empowering women to achieve sobriety, gain employment, receive life-skill training and a second chance at life. As of 2018, they have provided assistance to more than 384 women and children in Clarksville. We look forward to seeing how Butterly Moments will be able to assist our local community and we are glad to offer them any support we can!

Tennessee Titans

Last but not least, we’re giving love to the Tennessee Titans! This is one of our newest partnerships and we’re so happy to support the Titans. We’ve done a community outreach event to help get kids moving and we were honored to play a scrimmage on the field in 2019 against the Derby City Dynamite (we won!). The Titans are a powerhouse team, boasting talents like Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill. The Titans have been amazing role models on how to be a better athlete, how to give back to your community, and how to win at all costs. As we get ready for our upcoming season, we’re rooting for the Titans to take it all as they head back to the field in 2021.

We couldn’t do what we do without the support of these fine companies and establishments. With their help, we’ve been able to reach more fans, promote women’s football, and serve our community. That’s not all though! We have a ton of national sponsors through the Women’s Football Alliance. Be on the lookout for more information on how and where to support our sponsors!

Here comes 2021!

Well, we’re finally here! After the world finally starts to recover from the effects of Covid-19, we’re able to begin a new season in the WFA! It’s been a long time coming for the Mizfits to hit the field again.

Offensive Lineman Rachael Calar and Owner Rachael Ortiz-Marsh

On the field, we’ve got a new mix to the coaching staff, a big helping of standout rookies, and a hunger to finally show what we’ve got to the WFA and the city of Nashville. Coaching for the Mizfits, we have Tracy Logan as Head Coach, Donald Ragsdale as Offensive Coordinator, Matt Breymeyer as Defensive Coordinator, Dawn Foster as Assistant Coach, and Robert Hayes as Line Coach. Rookies include Kayla Hutcherson, Rodneika Crutcher, Kamari Townsend, Jasmine Blanton, Molly Suess, Jordin Crabtree, Allison Randall, and Heather Tatum. They’ve all made a huge impact on the field during practice and we can’t wait to see how they do as we suit up for scrimmages and season games. Our seasoned vets have done an amazing job guiding rookies as well as leading the ranks. Although we lost a few amazing talents who moved on to coaching positions and other life goals, we do know we’ve got a great core base of veterans to rely upon as we begin to watch game footage and work in complex formations and plays.

Behind the scenes, we’ve also been working hard to promote the Mizfits brand and our sponsors. Recently securing a sponsorship with Cafe Coco, the Mizfits are planning to bring a ton of business and victory celebrations to the local cafe. We also recently participated in a WFA challenge to photograph the Mizfits promoting our league sponsors. We chose Coors and Teambuildr and we may have had a little too much fun showing off our sponsors, but we plan on doing more for our other sponsors as well. We’ve also had several great joint practices with our partners the Nashville Elite. Having that extra presence on the field definitely gives us an advantage when teaching a new play or formation.

We’re so excited to hit the field. We have a scrimmage coming up with our friends the Knoxville Lightning. It’s always a friendly game and a great learning tool for the rookies and vets. You should always practice how you want to perform, but there’s nothing like the pressure of game day.

Don’t miss out on the Mizfits! We’ll be sharing the 2021 schedule as as soon as possible. We’ll also start the search for volunteers, so if you’re Until then, take a look out our gear and keep an eye out for new 2021 Mizfits apparel. Your support means the world to us.

Go Mizfits!

Did you hear the new Secret, Wilson?

Womens’ football? Where’s the money in that? Who wants to watch THAT?

Wilson is trying to see what we got going on over here!

Plenty of folks, apparently. We’re going live and we’re gaining a ton of attention and exposure from so many different avenues. For the first time, the WFA will be able to broadcast the 2020 season on national television, reaching millions of viewers. Eleven Sports will televise 10 WFA Games of the Week, matching up the top teams in the league, the league playoffs, and the WFA National Championship. This is huge.

An obvious big win with so many WFA alumni joining the NFL back to back to back. The biggest and probably most heard of is Katie Sowers who is a former player for the Kansas City Titans. She just coached in the 54th Superbowl and they put up a fight, but they did lose. She didn’t though, seeing as she was in a whole commercial and got quoted around the league for noting, “I’m not trying to be the best female coach. I’m trying to be the best coach”. Say a word, sis!

In true Black History Month fashion, we have Jennifer King who will be the first African American woman to coach in the league…ever. Callie Brownson is working with the Buffalo Bills who had a heck of a season, and Lori Locust and Maral Javadifar of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since 2015, seven full-time female coaches and 15 female coaching interns have worked in the league. It’s finally happening. I don’t know if you saw it, but the Utah Girls Football League got some major accolades during the 2020 Pro Bowl. I’m pretty sad they didn’t show that as it seems like the fans were more interested in that then the actual pro bowl!

Turn your head and you see the WFA continuing to blow open more and more doors for us ladies. When you’re trying to build a brand, it always helps to have someone in your corner and now we’re playing with the bigger dogs.  First off, Secret deororant has jumped on board to support the WFA. The contribution is the largest corporate donation ever given to women’s football.

“Secret believes strength is more than overcoming what makes us sweat. It’s pushing for progress and a level play field. We are proud to announce our partnership with the Women’s Football Alliance to air their National Championship on TV for the first time ever. Let’s be on the right side of history and #KickInequality”

Lisa King, Commissioner of the WFA says “To have a major company like Procter and Gamble support our league, is the final major piece women’s football has been missing. After decades, we are finally getting noticed, respected, and supported.”

Turn your head the other way and you’ll find Wilson peeking over the fence. Get it? Home Improvement. Anyway, Wilson is now our football partner! The Wilson football was the official game ball for the recent Superbowl. In addition to professional football equipment and gear, the Wilson sporting goods company offers equipment and apparel for all major sports including baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, volleyball, and others. “We are proud to have the WFA logo on every Wilson football,” stated King, “but we are even more excited that the company trusted by NCAA and NFL for their game balls, is now officially supporting our teams and players.”

We’re doing things in a big way locally. The Mizfits are working with the biggest roster we’ve had in years and we stand to have another big season in DIII WFA football. We’ve already had a major off-season boost with our Titans’ stadium debut in November and we’re sure to keep bringing you more opportunities to see us play. We hope to keep the momentum rolling from our first scrimmage win into our second one against the Tri City Thunder. We’ll be hosting our first ever signing party full of food, drinks, live performances, and the chance to become a part of something important to so many young women. Our games are going to be streamed live at LOCAL BAR AND GRILLE and we’ll have our highlights rolling every week! We’ll be back with new (yes, again!) uniforms and a vengeance to take what is ours.

There’s so much happening in the WFA and Mizfits Nation that it’s hard to keep up. Just know that with every dollar you donate and with every drip of sweat, we’re building a legacy we can all live on. All it takes is a little hard work and a lot of dedication. Let’s go Mizfits!

Coaching Staff 2020 Updates

With the changing of the season, we saw a few slight changes in the coaching staff for the Mizfits this year. Most of the changes were out of necessity and we’re excited to see what these men and women are going to do for our 2020 season.

Head Coach
Tracy Logan will serve as the Head Coach for the Mizfits. He brings a ton of experience from previous teams whether playing or coaching. Coach Logan will also serve as Defensive Coordinator. We also get an added bonus as Logan is also a referee. The expertise he will be able to provide to us from different angles will be significant. You’ll never catch him without SOMETHING purple for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated. It works well with the uniform 🙂

Assistant Coach
For Assistance Coach, we have Tank Breymeyer, who will also serve as the Offensive Coordinator. Tank did an amazing job with his first year of coaching the Mizfits defense in 2019. We figured it only a natural progression for Tank to take the lead this season!

Line Coach
We are so pleased to welcome back Coach Dawn Foster in her upteenth year with the Mizfits. Dawn continues to provide guidance to our line on either side of the ball. One comment from a rookie this year: Ms. Dawn can HIT! And that’s saying something. We can’t wait to see the fire Coach Foster provides to our line.

Receivers Coach
For our Receiver Coach, we welcome back Cherise Sumlar. Coach Sumlar comes with a massive amount of personal experience playing tackle football as well as many years serving local youth teams. You can always find Cherise working with the Music City Saints, drilling the heck out of receivers on their footwork, or at the church! She’s also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

DB/RB Coach
Finally, we have the pleasure of welcoming Coach Dorrell Baugh-Brown to our squad as the Defensive Back and Running Back coach. Dorell is a long time Elite player. We recently watched him snag a beautiful interception in their season opener, so we have much to learn from him! We’re excited to see what Coach Baugh brings to the team this season!

The coaches aren’t alone in this. We have trainers, managers, and owners who help bring this production together every season. We can’t say how excited we are to see the team continue to grow! Exciting times lie ahead and we can’t wait to bring you on the journey with us!

Recognizing Greatness

Music City Mizfits 2019 All-Americans

The year has been chock full of awards and recognition for our top athletes. Just a few months ago, we saw 9 Mizfits selected for WFA All-American and three of them were first team. Right after that, we honored running back Jamie Lock and linebacker Jessica Phelps for their outstanding achievements during the 2019 season. Our goal here is to make it harder and harder to choose who to recognize!

Bowl Game Selections
Recently, Lock, Taylor-Brimm, and Jackson went to Canada as a part of the WFA’s Team Elite. While there, they contributed to a 49-0 shutout over the Canadian team. Jasmine Brimm was crowned Defensive Player of the game and everyone got a jersey and medal to commemorate the experience.

We also saw several of our players head to Las Vegas for the Hall of Fame Bowl game and a few others who were selected for the next Team Elite game in Miami! It’s been a huge year of recognizing amazing talent and getting to challenge ourselves as we see the world.

Coaching Opportunities
Finally, we’ve seen so many league changes within the world of women’s football, but this doesn’t include the changes around the arena, youth, and local leagues. We’ve been lucky enough to see our own Jamie Lock take on a coaching position last year with local high school Ezell Harding as the running back coach. She’s only doing more this year as she’s signed on as a coaching intern with the Music City Fire.

We have two current coaches on our team who will also be coaching the Nashville Elite, Tracy Logan and Matt Breyemeyer. The Elite are a powerhouse team and partners to the Music City Mizfits. So far this season, they’re off to a 1-1 start and we know they’ll continue to progress. This means we condition and work with the Elite who help us grow stronger. Just ask them about our first scrimmage against them!
